How to Open a PES File (Free, No Software)
A PES file is the design format Brother and Baby Lock embroidery machines read. If you double-click one on your computer, chances are nothing useful happens: Windows and macOS don’t come with anything that understands embroidery files, and the usual answer is to install embroidery software you may not otherwise need.
You don’t need to. You can open a PES file in your web browser, for free, and see exactly what it will stitch.
Open a PES file in your browser
- Go to the embroidery file viewer.
- Drop your PES file into the box, or click it to choose the file.
- Click View Design.
You’ll see a preview of the design and its width and height in inches. There’s nothing to install and you don’t need an account.
What you can check before you stitch
Opening the file first saves thread and stabilizer. Look at:
- The size. Compare the width and height with your hoop. A 4x4 hoop stitches a field of about 3.9 × 3.9 in (100 × 100 mm), and a design that’s even a little too big won’t load on the machine.
- The design itself. Make sure it’s the file you think it is. Downloaded design packs often hold several similar files with names that don’t tell you much.
- The colors. PES files keep their thread colors, so the preview shows the colors the design asks for. Your machine will show the same ones when you load it.
What to do next
Below the preview are a few links:
- Convert to another format opens the converter with your file already loaded, if your machine needs DST, JEF or EXP instead. There’s more on that in how to convert PES to DST (and back).
- Watch it stitch plays the design back stitch by stitch, in the order the machine will sew it.
- Edit this file in Stitch Studio opens the design in our free embroidery editor, if you need to change it.
Can I open other formats the same way?
Yes. The viewer also opens DST, JEF, EXP and VP3 files. DST and EXP files don’t store thread colors, so those previews use placeholder colors. If you’re not sure which format is which, PES vs DST vs JEF vs EXP explains the differences.
