Best Free Embroidery Fonts for Hats, Towels and Patches
A font that looks great on a T-shirt can sink into a towel or turn to mush on a patch. What you’re stitching on decides how big your letters can be and how bold they need to be. Here are the free fonts I’d reach for on three of the most common projects, all of them in the embroidery font generator.
Every font is designed for a range of sizes. Outside that range, the stitches either crowd together or spread too far apart. The sizes below are the height of a capital letter, from the smallest each font is designed for to the largest. For a single line of capitals, that’s what goes in the generator’s Height box.
Hats
A cap front is curved, stiff and small: there’s usually room for about 2 inches of height and 4 to 5 inches of width. Thin strokes get lost on the curve, so pick a bold satin font and keep the wording short.
| Font | Capital height | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Barstitch Bold | 0.36–0.93 in | Heavy, plain sans serif. Reads from across a room. |
| Millimarif-bold20 | 0.45–0.84 in | Bold and slightly narrower, so longer words still fit. |
| Emilio 20 Simple | 0.59–1.64 in | Classic capitals with a zigzag underlay that holds them up on a stiff front. Capitals and numbers only. |
| TT Masters | 0.25–0.76 in | A solid choice for a second, smaller line under a logo. |
Towels
Terry cloth has loops that swallow fine stitches. Go bigger and bolder than you would on flat fabric, and put a layer of water-soluble topping over the towel so the stitches sit on the loops instead of between them. Avoid running-stitch fonts here; they disappear into the pile.
| Font | Capital height | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Chopin Script | 1.38–2.06 in | A full, formal script. A good fit for names on a bath towel. |
| Auberge Marif | 0.61–1.43 in | A softer script for hand towels and smaller names. |
| Initials Medium | 1.69–4.84 in | Large single-letter monograms. Capitals, numbers and the ampersand. |
| Emilio 20 Simple | 0.59–1.64 in | Clean capitals, if script isn’t your style. |
Patches
Patches are small, so text is usually small too, often around the edge or under a picture. Satin fonts with a low minimum size work best. Stick to a few words and leave a margin between the text and the border.
| Font | Capital height | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Caffeine KOR | 0.39–0.98 in | A clean sans serif built for small lettering. |
| Ink/Stitch Medium Font | 0.33–0.65 in | A simple satin font for short labels at small sizes. |
| Apex Simple AGS | 0.70–1.21 in | Serif capitals, for a vintage or club-badge look. |
Several fonts also come in Small or tiny versions, such as Caffeine tiny and Auberge Small, made to be stitched smaller than the originals. Those need thin 60 wt thread and a thin needle; with standard 40 wt thread, the letters fill in.
Want a patch to put your text on? The free patch templates open in Stitch Studio, where you can add a name or a date with the same fonts.
Before you stitch
Type your text into the generator, pick a font and preview it. The preview shows the finished width and height, so you can check that it fits your hat, towel or patch before you download anything.
